Soil fauna precipitate the convergence of organic matter quality during decomposition

چکیده
Plant litter constitutes the dominant resource to soil food webs, which gradually decompose and transform it into organic matter. A central paradigm of this transformation posits that differences in quality between distinct types disappear during decomposition, as converge towards similar physicochemical characteristics. Yet, is debated not based on clear metrics. It also largely derived from microbial decomposition studies, while effect litter-feeding animals, by transforming large quantities faeces, remains poorly documented. We addressed knowledge gap quantifying variability characteristics amongst leaf six tree species contrasting quality, before after conversion faeces animal species. found diverse animals reduced physical chemical types. evaluated consequences animal-driven convergence further microbial-driven decomposing intact comparing decomposed materials. Chemical uningested converged at rates. This indicates animal- are additive, precipitate matter decomposition. propose here a new framework an associated metric study changes we argue essential for improved understanding modelling formation.

Sulfur species behavior in soil organic matter 3 during decomposition
7 [1] Soil organic matter (SOM) is a primary reservoir of terrestrial sulfur (S), but its role in 8 the global S cycle remains poorly understood. We examine S speciation by X-ray 9 absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy to describe S species behavior 10 during SOM decomposition. Sulfur species in SOM were best represented by organic 11 sulfide, sulfoxide, sulfonate, and sulfate. Th...
متن کاملEffect of Living Roots on Soil Organic Matter Decomposition
Published information is contradictory about the inhibitory or stimulatory effect of living roots on soil organic matter d~m~sition. In this study, i4C-labelled rye straw was exposed in fertilii or unfertilized soil with or without plants (winter rye, Se&e cereuIe) for 49 days under semi-controlled conditions. Our objective was to study the effect of roots on soil organic matter mineralization ...
متن کاملNitrogen addition changes grassland soil organic matter decomposition
Humans have dramatically increased the deposition and availability of nutrients, such as nitrogen (N), worldwide. Soil organic matter (SOM) is a significant global reservoir of carbon (C); however, the effects of N enrichment on this large, heterogeneous C stock are unclear. Nitrogen has variable effects on the biological, chemical, and physical factors that determine SOM pool mean residence ti...
متن کاملEffects of environmental and biotic factors on carbon isotopic fractionation during decomposition of soil organic matter
Decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in the global carbon cycle because the CO2 emitted from soil respiration is an important source of atmospheric CO2. Carbon isotopic fractionation occurs during SOM decomposition, which leads to (12)C to enrich in the released CO2 while (13)C to enrich in the residual SOM. Understanding the isotope fractionation has been demonstr...
